What is Hazmat Drayage?

Hazmat drayage is the short-haul movement of containers carrying hazardous materials — chemicals, flammables, corrosives, and other regulated dangerous goods — between ports or rail ramps and nearby facilities. It follows the same first-mile/last-mile pattern as ordinary drayage but under a much stricter regulatory regime.

Hauling hazmat requires drivers with a Hazardous Materials endorsement on their commercial license (which itself demands a TSA security check), correct placarding of the container, compliant shipping papers, and adherence to routing, parking, and time-in-transit rules for dangerous goods. The carrier must hold the appropriate hazmat operating authority and carry higher insurance limits.

At the port, hazmat containers often face additional handling requirements and tighter free-time pressure, because terminals limit how long dangerous goods can sit on the ground. That makes prompt, compliant hazmat drayage especially valuable — and a specialty not every drayage carrier offers.
