A chassis pool is a shared, managed fleet of chassis that multiple trucking companies draw from and return, instead of every carrier maintaining its own equipment. Pools are operated by leasing companies, terminals, or cooperatives, and they let a driver grab an available chassis at a terminal or depot, use it for the move, and return it to any pool location.
Pools solve the problem that no single carrier can economically position enough chassis everywhere they might be needed. A "gray pool" or neutral pool is one where the chassis are interoperable across many providers, which simplifies picking up and dropping off equipment at busy gateways.
The tradeoff is that pool availability, condition, and billing (per-diem days start when you take a chassis from the pool) all depend on the pool operator — so pool health directly affects how smoothly drayage flows at a port.
